Elementary School Boundary Review Meeting

Date & Time:
May 14 2009 - 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Location:
East Silver Spring Elementary

I’m writing to pass along some important information for those with school age children.

Montgomery County Public Schools created a Boundary Advisory Committee tasked with reshaping the schools’ current boundaries and as a result, children in South Silver Spring may be sent to two different elementary schools.

If you look at the links below, blocks 5a and 5b are the South Silver Spring area. The dividing line that would bisect our community is essentially Blair Mill Rd and rt 410 (East-West Highway).

Under option 6, which I have been told is a pretty unlikely scenario, all students from South Silver Spring would be moved to Sligo Creek Elementary rather than the current East Silver Spring Elementary.

If the school board chooses option 4, block 5a would attend East Silver Spring Elementary School while block 5B (which includes the Blairs, the Veridian, the Silverton and the Bennington) would attend Sligo Creek Elementary School.

There is a meeting at East Silver Spring Elementary to review the boundary options on May 14th from 7 - 8:30 PM. There is also a larger community meeting at Takoma Park Middle School on May 27th from 7 -9 PM.

If you would like more information, please email Bruce Crispell (bruc...@mcpsmd.org) and Deborah Szyfer (Debo...@mcpsmd.org), who are managing the boundary study for MCPS.

Please pass this info to others so that all parents can be part of the decision making process.

Your neighbor,

Evan Glass
President, South Silver Spring Neighborhood Association

Evan and Neighbors,

I am the PTA president at East Silver Spring ES and am serving on the boundary study committee with two other parents.  I urge you to explore the links that Evan posted and/ or contact me for further information.  There are six options currently being evaluated, of which three (options 1, 4, and 5) seem to be the most viable.  Of those three, the only option that does NOT split our community is option 1.  Options 4 and 5 involve transferring ESS kids to Sligo Creek ES in 2010.  Option 4 would split south Silver Spring.  Our committee has expressed strong opposition to doing this as it would cut your community in half,  but we would love to hear from you!  We will be submitting our full evaluations in writing to the Superintendent on Tuesday, June 3rd.  Please feel free to contact me any time - I am happy to include your feedback in the report.  Also- June 3rd is not the final deadline for your voices to be heard.  This process will continue into next Fall when the Board of Ed will make a final decision.
