Mayorga To Close
If you haven't heard the sad news by now, Mayorga Coffee Factory will be closing its doors at the end of the year. Many of us can remember moving to South Silver Spring due in part to our buildings' advertising the proximity to the coffee shop and other wonderful businesses in the area. Mayorga was a great place to surf the web, read the newspaper, hold meetings, and yes, even drink coffee. It was because of Mayorga's prominence in our community that we held our very first social event at Mayorga in July 2007.
But keep in mind that there are other independently owned coffee shops within walking distance and that our patronage is equally important to them: Tiramisu Bakery Cafe, Highland Coffee and Kefa Cafe.
For more information about Mayorga's shuttering, here is the latest Gazette article and here is the public announcement from Martin Mayorga.

What terrible news!! :( I've always enjoyed Mayorga's coffee and the fact that the place is big enough to comfortably sit, read, and talk to people. I like that I can go there for a cup of coffee, a meal, and even a glass of wine and that it's all within easy walking distance. Cutting off Blair Mill Road never made any sense to me. Whoever made that decision killed off a wonderful local business and a community fixture. Highland Coffee's great too--I stop there or at Kefa Cafe whenever I'm in the Fenton Street area--but no way am I going to trudge 4 blocks up Georgia Avenue when I just want a quick cup of coffee. Will have to give Tiramisu a shot, as it's much closer. I hope Mayorga can eventually reopen again in a new location.
